Hornsby Welcome Markets

Hornsby Mall is a pedestrian street with a water clock in the middle of it, and once a month the council fills it with a market that runs from half past eight until four. Seven and a half hours is unusually long for a monthly market, and the mall's position beside the station means it catches passing traffic all day rather than just the people who came for it.

A variety market, run by the council

The stall mix is fashion, jewellery, decor, art and crafts, assorted homewares, and a run of food stalls. Council-run rather than leased to a promoter, which shows in the consistency: the dates are published a year out and the market has not drifted in character the way privately run markets often do when a new operator takes over.

Being in the mall rather than a showground or a park changes the market's job. This is somewhere people arrive at without planning to, which is why the stall mix leans towards things you can carry home on the train.

Good to know before you go

Hornsby station is a two minute walk and Westfield Hornsby has parking if you drive, both of which make this one of the easier Sydney markets to reach without a car. Bring a bag. Seven and a half hours means there is no rush, though the mall is busiest between eleven and two when the shopping crowd and the market crowd overlap. January is the month off, so check the calendar rather than assuming the first Saturday always applies.
