About this market
The North Rocks Market held its 40th anniversary event on 21 May 2023, which puts its first market in the early 1980s and makes it one of the longer-running weekly markets in Sydney's north west. It is run by members of the Rotary Club of Carlingford, a not-for-profit community service organisation that has been operating since 1972, in the grounds of NextSense on North Rocks Road, directly opposite the North Rocks Shopping Centre.
An early start, and a very mixed floor
Trading opens at 7am, which is early even by Sunday market standards, and closes at 1pm. The stalls cover clothing, jewellery, shoes and handbags, fresh produce, pre-loved household items and tools, potted plants for the garden, paintings, books and collectables. Food is straightforward and good: hot gozleme, a barbecue, and coffee. Nothing here is curated into a theme, and that is the appeal. It is a genuine general market where a plant stall sits next to a table of second-hand tools.
Market at a glance
The stallholder arrangement is unusually open. Rather than a booking system, casual sellers simply queue before 6:30am across the road at the western end of the shopping centre and are allocated a space on the day. Permanent stallholders hold their spots, but there is always room for someone turning up with a car boot of things to sell.
Every dollar the market raises goes to Rotary projects, and the list is specific rather than vague: feeding the homeless at Parramatta Mission, funding a three year Indigenous nursing scholarship at Western Sydney University, and shipping recycled audiology and dental equipment to Samoa and elsewhere.
Good to know before you go
Come early. A 7am open means the serious buyers, particularly for tools, collectables and plants, are through before most people have had breakfast, and by noon the market is winding down. Parking is easiest across the road at the North Rocks Shopping Centre rather than trying to get into the NextSense grounds. Bring cash, since casual stallholders are often selling out of a car boot without a card reader, and bring bags. If you are selling rather than buying, the 6:30am queue is the whole booking process, so there is no point calling ahead. This is Dharug country.
