Roy Day Park in the gemfields town of Sapphire hosts a community market every Sunday from March to October, run jointly by two local volunteer groups: Gemfields Riding for the Disabled Inc. and the Gemfields Lapidary & Craft Club.

A gemfields market run by the volunteers who fund the town's own causes

The two organising groups take turns running the market's canteen each week, a small but telling detail: this is a market that exists to fund its own volunteers' work as much as to sell stalls to visitors. Sapphire itself sits on the Gemfields Miners Common, a 4,500-hectare reserve dating to 1914 where residents still hold grazing rights over unfenced land, including the town centre, the last arrangement of its kind still operating in Australia.

Sapphire is one of four townships, alongside Rubyvale, Anakie and Willows, that make up the Sapphire Gemfields, one of the largest sapphire-bearing areas in the world and about a 45-minute drive west of Emerald. The Sunday market gives both locals and gem-hunting visitors a regular reason to gather at Roy Day Park through the cooler part of the year.

The pairing of a lapidary and craft club with a riding-for-the-disabled group is a reminder of how small a place Sapphire is: two hobby and charity groups, rather than a dedicated events organiser, are enough to keep a weekly market running for eight months of the year.

Every Sunday from March to October, 8am to 12pm, at Roy Day Park on Anakie Sapphire Road, Sapphire. The nearest regional centre is Emerald, about a 45-minute drive east, which is the practical fallback for fuel, groceries or a meal outside market hours. The market takes no Sundays over the November-to-February off-season, so it's worth confirming the season is running before making the trip out to the gemfields, particularly at the start of March or end of October when the calendar is turning over.
