Snowy Community Market

Seasonal community markets in Jindabyne bringing together local growers, bakers and makers in the Snowy Mountains.

About this market

The Snowy Community Market is a seasonal market in Jindabyne, in the Snowy Mountains of southern New South Wales. Rather than trading every week, it gathers local growers, bakers, makers and small businesses on chosen dates through the year.

A market in a relocated mountain town

Jindabyne sits at 918 metres above sea level overlooking Lake Jindabyne, and it is a service town for the Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass ski resorts. At the 2021 census it had 2,986 residents. The town was moved to its present site in the 1960s when the Snowy Mountains Scheme dammed the Snowy River, and Jindabyne Dam was completed in 1967. The dam is one of sixteen major dams in the Snowy Mountains Scheme, built between 1949 and 1974, and the town connects to Cooma and then Canberra by Kosciuszko Road East. The town's name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning valley.

The market's own description promises fresh produce, sourdough, handmade goods, plants and artisan products, with the stated aim of supporting local and shopping local. Its Facebook page has around 1,100 followers, which is where new dates and stallholder calls are announced. Jindabyne is reached from the west by the Alpine Way and from the south by the Barry Way, and from Cooma by Kosciuszko Road East.

Good to know before you go

Check the Facebook page before you travel, because the market is seasonal and the schedule is set event by event. The operator can be reached at [email protected] for stallholder enquiries. The operator lists its address as 7-9 Baggs Street, Jindabyne.

Jindabyne is a popular holiday destination year round, so the town is busiest in the ski season, so allow extra time for parking then. Jindabyne is one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia, so dress for mountain weather even in spring.

Did you know?

Jindabyne as you see it today was built in the 1960s. The original township now lies under Lake Jindabyne, and the new town celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 2014.
