What's in Season in July in Australia
· LocalMarketSpot
July is the middle of citrus season, with mandarins at their peak in four states, winter strawberries at their best in the north and brassicas everywhere in the south.
July is the month the southern market table is at its plainest and, if you cook, its most useful. Victoria has ten crops at their peak and eight of them are vegetables you roast, braise or put in soup.
The fruit is citrus, and it is at its best now.
Harvest months, when growers are picking.

Citrus at its peak
Mandarins are at their peak in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. Grapefruit is at its peak in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Oranges start in Victoria, the last state to join, and are being picked in New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia.
Buy mandarins now and oranges next month. Oranges do not reach their peak in Victoria, New South Wales or Western Australia until August.
The brassica month
Cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts are all at their peak in Victoria, with broccoli at its peak in New South Wales. Carrots, parsnips and potatoes are at their peak in Victoria as well, and the globe artichoke is in its second peak month.
Fennel is being picked in Victoria and Queensland. It is a cool season crop that is at its best through winter and gone by October.
Winter berries, from the north
Strawberries reach their peak in Queensland and Western Australia and hold it until September. This is the one that surprises people: the winter berry in the north and the summer berry in the south are two separate seasons.
Blueberries are at their peak in New South Wales, and raspberries are being picked there and in Queensland.
Avocados change state
Avocados start in New South Wales. Queensland has been picking since March and is past its peak, and Western Australia and South Australia begin in August. The crop moves around the country through the year, which is why avocados never quite feel seasonal even though each region's crop is.
Queensland's winter
Queensland has 28 crops in July. Green beans, zucchini, leeks and cabbage are at their peak, tomatoes are being picked, and cauliflower and peas start. Bananas and lemons are at their peak too.
Tasmania
Seven crops: carrots and potatoes at their peak, with broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, leeks and parsnips. Leeks start and nothing ends. It is the stillest month of the island's year.
On the bench or in the fridge
Most of July's produce goes straight into the fridge and stays good for a long time. Mandarins and oranges keep for up to a month in a bag, grapefruit for three weeks, cabbage for two to three, and mature carrots and parsnips for three to four.
Leeks keep one to two weeks in the fridge, uncovered. Cauliflower has about a week. Broccoli and Brussels sprouts are the ones to use first, at around five days in a perforated bag in the crisper.
Avocados are the exception to the fridge rule. Leave them uncovered on the bench until ripe, then refrigerate and use within two to five days. Strawberries have a day or two, in a vented container.
Storage times here are from the City of Darebin's food storage chart, a Victorian council guide.
August
Asian greens and lettuce return to Victoria. Blueberries start in Queensland and Western Australia.
Your state has its own page: Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia or Tasmania. The season lookup shows any month, and June is the guide before this one.
