Cotters Market has been trading since 1983, and every Sunday morning since then it has taken over Flinders Street in the heart of Townsville. Puft Events has managed the market since 2020, with a stated aim of connecting local growers, makers and emerging small businesses to the community in a way that also brings foot traffic to CBD businesses. That dual purpose explains the street-based layout: the market is meant to feed the city centre, not compete with it.

Four decades of that has made the Sunday morning trip a fixture rather than an event, and the operator's own description of the market as a Townsville tradition is one of the few claims of that kind that the calendar actually backs up.

The 1pm finish comes around quickly in Townsville heat, and the produce stalls thin out well before then, so an 8am to 10am visit gets the best of both. Being in the CBD means the usual Sunday street parking applies and the surrounding cafes are open, which is handy since the market itself is a walk-and-browse rather than a sit-down affair.
