Mullumbimby Farmers Market

An award-winning Friday morning farmers market at the Mullumbimby Showground, running since April 2010 and set up to support local food producers.

About this market

Mullumbimby Farmers Market began in April 2010 and runs every Friday morning from 7am to 11am at the Mullum Showground on Main Arm Road. The market calls itself award winning, and it was set up by the North Byron Farmers Market Association, the operators of the New Brighton Farmers Market, who saw a need for another farmers market in the north of the Byron Shire.

Growers, artisans and added-value foods

The vision was to widen the traditional farmers market model so that small businesses adding value to locally grown produce could trade alongside the farmers. The market describes a wide range of food and food-related products, from fresh fruit and vegetables to artisan food, seedlings and garden products. It lists produce that is hard to find commercially, such as exotic fruits and heirloom varieties, and unpasteurised foods such as milk, cheese and ferments including miso, tempeh, olives and sauerkraut. It also lists ethically produced meat and smallgoods, live music and a space for kids to play.

Mullumbimby sits at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley, about 9 kilometres from the coast and 15 kilometres north-west of Byron Bay. The name comes from the Bandjalang-Yugambeh word mulubinba, meaning small round hill. The town grew around the timber industry, with red cedar cut from the Big Scrub, and agriculture took over as the timber ran out, with dairy, beef, bananas and sugar cane as primary products. The 2021 census recorded 3,589 residents.

Good to know before you go

The market is a dog-free and cat-free venue, with an exception for guide dogs, because of council requirements for the showground. There is also no smoking on the premises. Plan to leave pets at home.
