What's in season in Northern Territory in October

The list below is what is being harvested in this part of the country this month, not what a supermarket happens to be stocking. At a producer market the two are different things, and the harvest list is the one that matches the stalls.

Buying it where it was grown

Seasonality is most useful when it is attached to somewhere to actually go. Every item here links through to the markets in this state that sell it, and the farmers market listings carry their own trading days, so you can work out both what is good and when you can get it in one pass.

What "starting next month" is actually for

The list further down is not a curiosity. A crop a few weeks from season is a crop worth planning the next market trip around, especially the short ones: cherries, figs and asparagus are gone again almost as fast as they arrive, and knowing they start in three weeks is more useful than finding out on week four.

The grower knows more than the calendar does

A harvest month is a state-wide average. The stallholder in front of you knows this week's actual picking, how many weeks are left in it, and which variety to buy if you want it to last. Asking is normal at a farmers market and it is usually the difference between a good punnet of stone fruit and a great one.
