Crown St Markets

Crown Street Mall has been Wollongong's pedestrian spine for decades, and for most of the last ten years it has hosted two weekly markets that many locals still call by their old names. Until 2021 the Thursday night session was Eat Street and the Friday session was run by the Foragers Group, who had won the tender in 2016. When that hire agreement lapsed during the COVID lockdowns, Sydney operator Blue Sky Markets won the new tender and folded both sessions under a single banner, Crown Street Markets.

One name covering two quite different nights out

The rebrand tidied the naming but did not flatten the difference between the two days, and it is worth knowing which one you are turning up to. Thursday from 5pm to 9pm is the night market: street food across a wide spread of cuisines, weekly live music drawn from local performers, and a crowd that comes to eat rather than carry things home. Friday from 8am to 3pm is the daylight version, and its centre of gravity is fresh produce from regional growers alongside designers, artists, bakers and makers selling things you take away with you.

Running a market inside an existing retail street is a different proposition to running one in a park. The stalls sit among trading shops rather than replacing them, which means the market inherits the mall's foot traffic instead of having to generate all of it, and it also means the surrounding cafes and shops stay open around you.

Good to know before you go

Pick your day by what you actually want. If it is dinner, music and a walk, come Thursday evening. If it is vegetables, bread and gifts, come Friday morning, and come early rather than late, since a market that closes at 3pm has usually thinned out well before then. Crown Street Mall is closed to cars, so park in the surrounding CBD car parks and walk in. Wollongong station is a short walk from the eastern end. Both sessions are outdoors in an open street, so there is shade in patches but not much shelter, and weather will change how many stalls you find.
