A railway town in the Limestone Coast
Kalangadoo is about 31 kilometres north of Mount Gambier and 348 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. The town grew around the railway station on the Naracoorte to Mount Gambier line, which opened in 1887, and the public school was established in 1892. The district is farming country, known for potatoes and timber, with apple orchards, beef cattle, sheep and dairy cattle. The railway station closed in 1985, the line closed to freight in 1995, and tourist trains stopped running on 1 July 2006. The public school peaked at 150 pupils in 1966, and the community club is home ground to the town's football, netball, cricket and bowls clubs. The name changed from Kalangadoo East to Kalangadoo in 1940, and the old timber mill was bought in 2016 with plans to make wood veneer for export.
The market gives a small town of a few hundred people a weekly gathering point. At the 2016 census the state suburb had 473 residents. Listings describe fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery items and cheese, handmade goods, recycled books and magazines, and local artists, with a cafe and a barbecue on site.

Good to know before you go
Bring cash, since the market takes cash payment only. The hours are 10am to 1pm every Saturday, and weekly guides describe it as running rain, hail or shine. Tourism listings say disabled access is available, with the operator the one to contact for details.
Mount Gambier's own farmers market closed in June 2026, which leaves Kalangadoo as the weekly option about 31 kilometres to the north. The town also has a general store and a pub.
Kalangadoo was originally proclaimed as Kalangadoo East in 1891. Its name is an Aboriginal word meaning big trees in water.
