Night Markets in Australia

· LocalMarketSpot

Australia's night markets run on opposite seasons at opposite ends of the country. Darwin trades through the dry, Perth through summer, and Sydney all year.

There are 35 night markets in this directory and they do not share a season. Darwin's run from April to October and shut for the wet. Perth's run from November to March and shut for winter. Sydney's run all year, because Sydney can.

That single fact decides more night market plans than anything on a map. Below is where they actually are, and when.

Darwin, and the one everybody means

Market stalls lit with string lights at dusk as an evening night market opens for trade

Mindil Beach Sunset Market is the market other Australian night markets get compared to. Four people started it in 1987 wanting something like a Southeast Asian night market in Darwin. It first set up in Darwin Mall, nearby shopkeepers complained about lost trade, and the move to Mindil Beach turned out to make it.

It trades Thursday and Sunday evenings, 4pm to 9pm, from the last Thursday in April to the last Thursday in October. Outside that it does not exist. Over 300 small businesses trade there now, employing more than a thousand people, and the whole thing is arranged around the sunset rather than around a shopping list.

Darwin's other markets are daytime affairs. Parap Village Markets runs Saturday 8am to 2pm and is the better one for laksa, and Nightcliff Market fills Sunday morning.

Sydney eats late, all year

Chinatown Friday Night Market takes Dixon Street from 4pm to 11pm, in a quarter with roots back to the 1870s gold rush on a street pedestrianised since 1980. It is the default answer for a Friday night in the city and it deserves to be.

Out west, Burwood Chinatown Night Markets runs hawker stalls four nights a week, Thursday to Sunday from 5pm, in a precinct that draws more than 180,000 visitors a week. At Eastwood, where Sydney's Koreatown meets its newest Chinatown, Eastwood Night Markets takes the town centre on Saturday evenings and the Taiwan Night Market trades four nights a week off Eastwood Plaza, open since a dragon-dance launch in 2016.

Two monthlies to time a visit around: Paddy's Night Food Markets at Flemington on the first Saturday, indoors, and Inner West Night Markets at Fraser Park in Marrickville on the first Friday, free, a short walk from Sydenham station.

Perth's summer season

Perth has the country's clearest seasonal pattern, and it is the reverse of Darwin's.

Scarborough Sunset Markets runs Thursday evenings on the beach foreshore, 5pm to 9pm, early November to late March. Twilight Hawkers Market turns Forrest Place into an open-air food hall on Friday evenings through the warm months, forty-plus vendors and live music. Subi Night Market trades Saturday evenings from spring to autumn in a park set aside as Subiaco's market square a century ago, and Sorrento Night Market does food trucks on a Friday through a long warm season, free and dog-friendly.

Arrive in Perth in July and none of this is happening. Know that before you book.

Queensland runs hot and late

Cairns Night Markets is the outlier of the whole category: a two-floor air-conditioned bazaar on Abbott Street that opens every single night of the year, Christmas Day included. In the tropics, air conditioning is the feature.

Eat Street Northshore in Brisbane is the best-known and the only one that charges to get in, a shipping-container village on the old Hamilton wharf built around street food and live music. Mt Gravatt Street Food is the free local answer, first and third Saturday evenings at the showgrounds, some stallholders twenty years in.

On the coast, Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets has run on the promenade three evenings a week since 1995, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm. Further north, Strand Night Markets at Townsville runs first-Friday evenings under six combined Rotary clubs, and Currimundi Twilight Market on the Sunshine Coast takes the third Friday.

Melbourne's smaller circuit

Melbourne, unusually, is not the leader here. Its night market scene is real but scattered, and much of it is summer-only.

Soul Night Market runs sixty maker stalls and food trucks on a reserve above Brighton Beach for five Friday evenings a summer, with a Mornington edition doing the same on the peninsula. Pacific Market Melbourne on Ballarat Road serves Pacific Island cooking and international street food five days a week, running late on three of them, and Blender Artist Market takes Friday evenings in Docklands.

For the rest of the year, Melbourne's after-dark eating happens in its permanent food halls rather than its markets. Queen's Food Hall at Queen Victoria Market is the obvious one.

Hobart, on a Friday

Street Eats @ Franko is a seasonal Friday night food market on the lawns of Franklin Square, run by the people behind Farm Gate Market. Tasmania's evening market season is short and worth catching if your dates line up.

Before you go

Two rules cover most of the disappointment. Check the season, because roughly half the markets on this page do not run year round, and check the day, because "night market" almost never means "every night".

Both are on every listing. If you want the computed version, markets on today answers the immediate question, and the night markets hub lists all 35 of them by state.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best night market in Australia?
Mindil Beach Sunset Market in Darwin, on reputation and on scale: over 300 small businesses, timed so the crowd watches the sun drop into the Timor Sea. It only runs in the dry season, Thursday and Sunday evenings from late April to late October, which is the catch.
Are Australian night markets seasonal?
Many are, and the seasons run opposite ways. Darwin's markets trade through the dry season from April to October and close for the wet. Perth's beachfront evening markets run from about November to March and stop for winter. Sydney's Chinatown and Burwood markets trade all year.
Which cities have year-round night markets?
Sydney is the strongest: Chinatown Friday Night Market on Dixon Street, Burwood Chinatown four nights a week, and the Taiwan Night Market at Eastwood. Cairns Night Markets on Abbott Street is open every night of the year, Christmas Day included, and it is fully air-conditioned.
Do night markets cost money to enter?
Nearly all of them are free. Eat Street Northshore in Brisbane is the notable exception, charging an entry fee, which is unusual enough in Australia that it surprises visitors.
