Parap Village Markets was founded in 1982 by a group of local shopkeepers looking to bring more life to the small Darwin suburb outside the CBD. The Parap Village Traders Association formed shortly after to manage it, and the market was run largely by volunteers for years, with Marlene Wood among those who kept it going through its early decades.
The stall that made Darwin a laksa capital
Few markets in Australia have a single stall as famous as Parap's Mary's Laksa. Guo Yang Yei, known simply as Mary, has run the stall for around 25 years, refining a recipe that regularly gets named among the best bowls of laksa in the country. Purple Lady Laksa trades alongside her, and between the two stalls, Parap has helped cement Darwin's reputation as Australia's unofficial laksa capital.

The road running through Parap Village wasn't built by council machinery. Early shopkeepers created it themselves simply by driving over the same patch of ground repeatedly until it packed down, and council came through later to bitumen what they'd already carved out.
