Mindil Beach Sunset Market was founded in 1987 by four people with an idea: bring something like Southeast Asia's night markets to Darwin. It first set up in Darwin Mall, but nearby shopkeepers complained to the council about lost trade, and the market moved to Mindil Beach instead, a change that turned out to define the whole experience.
Timed around a sunset, not a shopping list
The market only runs during Darwin's dry season, from the last Thursday in April to the last Thursday in October, on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 4pm to 9pm. Outside that window it doesn't operate at all. The timing is deliberate: stalls face the Timor Sea, and the market is built around watching the sunset from the sand between browsing food and craft stalls.
