Christmas Markets in Australia

· LocalMarketSpot

December is the one month an Australian market's usual day cannot be trusted. Some move a week early, some trade after dark, some double in size and some close.

December is the one month an Australian market's usual day cannot be trusted. In 2026 the fourth Saturday of the month is Boxing Day and the fourth Sunday is the 27th, which is when a lot of monthly markets would normally trade.

So they do something else. Some move a week early. Some switch to an evening. Some add a second date, some swell to nearly double their usual size, and a few just close. Which one your market does is the thing to find out before you drive.

The fourth weekend problem

A large share of Australian markets are monthly, and the fourth Saturday or Sunday is a common slot. This year that slot is useless for Christmas shopping, so the markets that hold it shift to the third weekend: Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 December.

Lancefield & District Farmers' Market moves from the fourth Saturday to the third. Boyanup & District Farmers Market does the same with its Sunday, and so does Springwood Growers Market in the Blue Mountains, which catches out regulars who have the fourth Sunday locked into their calendar.

That is the trap. A market you have visited ten times this year will not be where you expect it the one time you are relying on it for presents.

Markets that go twilight

The best December markets are the ones that give up the morning. It is hot, it is light until late, and nobody needs convincing to be outdoors at 7pm.

Beaufort Town Market runs its Christmas market on Friday 4 December from 5pm to 9pm, against 9am to 1pm for its Saturday dates. Myrtleford Farmers Market holds its December market in the evening instead of the morning. The Hills UPmarket in Castle Hill swaps its fourth Sunday for two Christmas twilight events on a Saturday evening.

Others shift by a few hours. Nunawading Arts & Craft Market trades 1pm to 5pm for its Christmas market, not its usual morning. Bicheno Community Market holds a separate Christmas Twilight Market on a Saturday alongside Carols in the Park, and Little Beauty Market in Frankston stages its Christmas market in November next to the council's Festival of Lights.

If you only go to one market in December, make it one of these. A twilight market is the same stalls with better light and a reason to stay for dinner.

Extra dates, and bigger ones

A second group keeps its usual day and adds another. Warrandyte Riverside Market trades the first Saturday of the month and then again on the third Saturday of December, which is the 19th this year. Deloraine Market skips November entirely, then gives December two markets. Belgrave Big Dreams Market holds a dedicated Christmas market outside its monthly cycle, and The Olive Tree Market in Newcastle adds a November date when the shopping season starts.

Some publish the date well ahead. Sutton Village Country Markets lists its Christmas Market for 13 December 2026. Distillery Road Market at Eagleby runs a two-day Christmas Market on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December.

Then there are the ones that simply get large. Richmond Good Food Market grows to more than 190 stalls for its Christmas edition, which makes it one of the biggest single-day markets in Western Sydney. Violet Town Community Market goes from up to 200 stalls in a normal month to as many as 290. Perth Hills Artisan Market at Mundaring spreads its Christmas market over two days.

Bigger is not automatically better. More stalls means longer queues at the food vans and a harder park, and at Richmond the advice is to arrive early for exactly that reason. You might think the answer is to skip the big ones. Fair, but they are also where you are most likely to find a present nobody else has bought.

A few are their own event

Not every Christmas market is a regular market in a Santa hat. Coburg Night Market exists for three nights only, in the week before Christmas, at Bridges Reserve on Bell Street. The organisers of Markets in Prospect in Adelaide run a separate Prospect Christmas Fair in December, an evening event with carols and a car show. Kalamunda Night Market moves its December dates out of the mall to Stirk Park.

And some just stop

Organisers get to have Christmas too.

Camberwell Sunday Market does not run on the Sunday roughly ten days before Christmas. Soul Night Market Brighton skips December on purpose, because a third Friday in December competes with work parties and loses. The Local Farmers Market at Wandi trades every Sunday of the year except over the Christmas holidays, and The Belmont Market in Geelong does not trade on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve.

The far north runs the other way. Marina Markets in Port Douglas shuts for the wet season and comes back for the Christmas school holidays, and Cairns Night Markets opens all 365 nights, Christmas Day included.

How not to get caught

Read the listing first. Every market in the directory shows how often it runs, and the write-up says what it does in December where we know. Then check the organiser's own Facebook page in the week you plan to go, because a December date is the one most likely to have moved since it was announced.

Markets this weekend is the quick way to see what is on, but it works from each market's regular pattern, so in December treat it as a starting list and confirm the date. When Australian markets run explains the monthly pattern behind all of this, and night markets in Australia covers the ones that trade after dark all summer.

One last thing. With so many markets pushed onto the same weekend, 19 and 20 December will be crowded. Go early, or go to a twilight one and let the morning crowd have the morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are Christmas markets held in Australia?
Mostly from late November to the weekend before Christmas. In 2026 that last weekend is Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December. A few start earlier: Little Beauty Market in Frankston holds its Christmas market in November, and The Olive Tree Market in Newcastle adds an extra November date.
Are markets open between Christmas and New Year?
Many monthly markets are not, because their usual fourth weekend lands on 26 and 27 December in 2026 and most move a week earlier. Weekly markets vary. The Local Farmers Market at Wandi closes over the Christmas holidays, while Marina Markets in Port Douglas comes back for them.
Is any market open on Christmas Day?
Cairns Night Markets on Abbott Street opens every night of the year, Christmas Day included. It is the exception. Christmas Day falls on a Friday in 2026, so the Sunday markets that close when it lands on a Sunday are not affected this year.
What is a twilight Christmas market?
A morning market that runs in the late afternoon and evening for its December date. Beaufort Town Market's Christmas market on Friday 4 December 2026 runs 5pm to 9pm against its usual 9am to 1pm, and Myrtleford Farmers Market holds its December market in the evening too.
