Brisbane Markets Start Before Sunrise
· LocalMarketSpot
South East Queensland runs its markets on a subtropical clock. The biggest one opens at 5am, and by lunchtime most of the good stalls are packed.
Caboolture Country Markets opens at 5am. The Brisbane Flower Market at Rocklea starts trading at half past four. This is not a quirk of two outliers: South East Queensland runs its markets on a subtropical clock, and the practical effect for a visitor is that a 9am arrival in Brisbane is already a late one.
Plan accordingly and the city rewards you. Turn up at eleven expecting a Melbourne-style late morning and you will be walking past half-empty trestle tables.
Sunday carries the week
Eleven markets across greater Brisbane trade every Sunday, against eight on Saturday. That imbalance is unusual, and it means you should build a weekend here around the Sunday rather than the Saturday.
Mt Gravatt Sunday Markets is the city's longest-running, trading since 1969 at showgrounds that have hosted the Mt Gravatt Show since 1918. Milton Markets is the inner-city option, held in Milton Green in a suburb named after one of Brisbane's oldest surviving colonial Georgian homes. Nundah Farmers Market trades in a train station car park in a suburb settled by Lutheran missionaries in 1838, which is a more interesting sentence than most farmers markets can manage.
East, Cleveland Markets has run on Bloomfield Street every Sunday for more than three decades, 7am to 1pm. North, Petrie Sunday Markets sits inside a 48-acre heritage village of relocated historic buildings and has traded since 1987.
And in the middle of the city, Genki Market has run Japanese and Asian street food on Charlotte Street every Sunday since 2021, 10am to 3pm. Small, and much better than its stall count suggests.
Saturday's shorter list
The West End Markets, still called Davies Park by everyone who has been going for years, is the one to build a Saturday around. It trades under a canopy of giant Moreton Bay figs on the river bank from 6am, closing at 2pm from March to November and an hour earlier through the hottest stretch from December to February. Budget time to sit and eat rather than treating it as a shop.
Kelvin Grove Village Markets runs 6am to 1pm in an urban village built on the Australian Army's former Gona Barracks. Jan Powers Farmers Markets at the Powerhouse in New Farm was Brisbane's first farmers market, founded by a Cordon Bleu-trained cook and still family-run three generations on, with a second edition at Manly on the first and third Saturday.
For an ordinary weekday shop rather than a weekend outing, VEND Marketplace at Virginia is a permanent indoor market open every day, started in 2018 after its founder saw the format working in New York.
After dark
Eat Street Northshore is Brisbane's best-known night market and the only one most visitors have heard of: a shipping-container village on the old Hamilton wharf, built around global street food and live music. It charges entry, which almost no other Australian market does, and its trading nights have changed more than once, so check the listing rather than assuming.
Mt Gravatt Street Food runs at the showgrounds on the first and third Saturday evening, 4pm to 9pm, with some stallholders who have been there over twenty years. It is the local answer to the same idea and it is free.
An hour south, the Gold Coast
Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets has run on the promenade three evenings a week since 1995, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 9pm, free, with the ocean behind the stalls. For a visitor with one night on the coast, this is the easy call.
In daylight, Burleigh Market trades Saturday beside a headland the Kombumerri people call Jellurgal, created by the spirit Jabreen in their Dreaming. Palm Beach Farmers Market has run at Currumbin State High School since 2000, also Saturday. HOTA Markets fills the cultural precinct at Surfers Paradise on a Sunday, on land once farmed for cotton and sugar cane.
Up in the hinterland, Tamborine Mountain State School Markets runs on the last Sunday of the month from 7am. It is the one to combine with a drive rather than the one to drive out for.
Two things the calendar will not tell you
Queensland's trading hours move with the season on a surprising number of markets. Redcliffe Markets on the Moreton Bay waterfront runs 8am to 2pm from March to November and switches to 7am to 1pm over summer. West End does something similar. The listing carries the current pattern; a printed flyer from last winter does not.
The other is rain. Queensland's outdoor markets cancel for weather more often than southern ones do, particularly through the storm season from November.
For what is actually trading, markets in Brisbane this weekend resolves the dates, and Sunday markets in Brisbane covers the day that matters most here. All 134 Queensland markets are on the QLD markets hub, with metro listings at the Brisbane and Gold Coast city hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What time do Brisbane markets open?
- Earlier than most people expect. Caboolture Country Markets opens at 5am, The West End Markets and Kelvin Grove Village Markets at 6am, and the Brisbane Flower Market at Rocklea from 4:30am. The heat is the reason, and it also means the best stalls thin out well before noon.
- Which Brisbane markets are open on Sunday?
- Sunday is Brisbane's main market day. Mt Gravatt Sunday Markets, Milton Markets, Nundah Farmers Market, Cleveland Markets, Petrie Sunday Markets, Caboolture Country Markets and Redcliffe Markets all trade every Sunday, along with several more monthly ones.
- Is Eat Street Northshore worth going to?
- If you want dinner and a walk, yes. It is a shipping-container night market on the old Hamilton wharf built entirely around global street food and live music, and it charges entry, which is unusual for an Australian market. Check the current trading nights on the listing before you go, because they change.
- What is the best market on the Gold Coast?
- For an evening, Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets, free and on the promenade three nights a week since 1995. For produce, Burleigh Market on a Saturday morning or Palm Beach Farmers Market, which has run at Currumbin State High School since 2000.
