Adelaide Markets, Built Around the Central Market

· LocalMarketSpot

Adelaide has traded from the same city market hall since 1869, and it is still the best in the country. Around it sits a farmers market scene the wine regions keep well supplied.

Most Australian capitals grew their market scene outward from the suburbs. Adelaide did it the other way. The Adelaide Central Market has stood on Grote Street since 1869, it is the largest undercover fresh produce market in the southern hemisphere, and it is still a working grocery hall that visitors happen to also treat as a sight. Everything else in this guide is arranged around it.

The second thing to know is that Adelaide punches well above its size for farmers markets, because the growing country starts about half an hour from the CBD in every direction.

Start at the Central Market

More than seventy independent traders under one roof: greengrocers, butchers, a fish hall, cheese, smallgoods, spice merchants, and bakeries. Some are family businesses several generations deep. Con's Fine Foods has been there since 1959. It is closed Sundays and Mondays, and Saturday morning is when the whole city seems to be shopping there at once, so a weekday visit is calmer if your dates allow it.

If you want the same food without the crush, Plant 4 Bowden is a former Clipsal electrical factory that sat empty for six years and was rebuilt as a market and eatery precinct with its original saw-tooth roof left intact. It trades daily and runs late on Wednesday and Friday.

Sunday is farmers market day

Adelaide Showground Farmers' Market at Wayville is the default. Sunday, 8:30am to 12:30pm, South Australia's largest, and it started in 2006 after twenty thousand people turned up to a one-off produce festival and made the case on their own. It is a ten minute tram ride from the city.

The one to drive for is Willunga Farmers Market, Saturday 8am to noon, in the middle of the McLaren Vale. You are buying from growers whose paddocks you passed on the way in, and it pairs naturally with a day in the wine region.

Up in the hills, Adelaide Hills Farmers' Market trades Saturday mornings at Mount Barker, and further north Barossa Farmers Market runs Saturday 7:30am to 11:30am at Angaston, which is an early start but the right way to begin a day in the Barossa.

The hills and the coast

Stirling Market runs the fourth Sunday of the month, 10am to 4pm, in a town founded in 1854 as a summer retreat for Adelaide's wealthy. On the same day from September to May, Stirling Laneways adds a second event through the village. Neither runs weekly, so check the date before you commit to the drive up.

Down on the Fleurieu Peninsula, Port Elliot Rotary Market trades first and third Saturday from October to May, with extra dates through December and weekly right through January.

Vintage, and summer nights

For secondhand, The Original Open Market at Christies Beach runs first and third Sunday, 8am to 1pm, and is the flea market to go through early. Closer in, Fullarton Market takes the fourth Saturday of the month with a mix of makers and secondhand stalls.

In summer, Ebenezer Night Markets runs about ten evenings from November to March in the East End laneways. The Market Shed on Holland works off a rotating calendar of themed events, including a monthly vegan market and Eats and Beats, so it is worth checking their schedule against your dates rather than assuming a fixed day. For a proper Sunday all-rounder, Semaphore Community Market runs every week by the sea, 10am to 3pm.

Working out what is on

Adelaide leans harder on monthly and seasonal markets than Sydney or Melbourne, so the calendar matters more here. Markets in Adelaide this weekend resolves the dates, and Saturday and Sunday have their own pages. Every South Australian market sits on the SA markets hub, with the metro subset at the Adelaide city hub. If you are new to markets generally, the visitor guide covers what to bring and when to arrive.
