Farm Gate Market began in 2009 with just 12 producers trading out of a Hobart carpark. Founder Madi Peattie built it on a single, strict rule: if you couldn't eat it, drink it, grow it, or meet the person who actually made it, it had no place at the market. That rule still shapes the market today, now grown into a full street-side event with more than 200 producers and an essential Sunday ritual for Hobart locals.

From carpark to a city block shut down for the day

The scale of that growth is easy to underestimate. What started as a handful of stalls in a carpark now takes over a stretch of Bathurst Street between Murray and Elizabeth Street, with the block closed to traffic for the entire morning. Recognition has followed the growth: Australian Traveller Magazine has ranked it among the top five farmers markets in the country, and it took home a Silver Medal for Excellence in Food Tourism at the 2015 Australian Tourism Awards.

Reviewers consistently point to the sheer variety packed into a small window each week: fresh cheese, yoghurt, seafood, and produce sold by growers who know their own paddocks well enough to talk through them stall-side, a level of direct connection that's rare even among farmers markets.

Good to know before you go

It wraps up at 1pm, so a mid-morning arrival still leaves time to work through the full stretch of stalls before things wind down. The relocation to the wider Bathurst Street block has made it noticeably easier to move around than the market's original carpark footprint.
