Talbot Town Hall Market

Talbot runs two markets on the same Sunday morning, and this is the indoor one. The Town Hall Market sets up in and around the recently restored town hall on Ballarat Street on the third Sunday of every month, 9am to 1pm, while the farmers market fills Scandinavian Crescent a short walk away.

Crafts, collectables and found materials

The stall list is deliberately different from what is happening in the street outside: books, plants, soaps, bags, accessories, collectables, tools, toys, socks and scarves, alongside artisan pieces creatively crafted from timber, cloth, iron and all sorts of found materials. That last category is the character of the thing, and it is what makes the town hall worth the detour rather than a shelter from the weather. The two markets are run as complements rather than competitors, and the town's own promotion treats them as one event with two halves.

A town of a few hundred people staging two markets on one Sunday is unusual anywhere. It works here because the market morning draws visitors from across the central goldfields rather than relying on the town itself. The scale outside is part of that: the farmers market carries over eighty stalls of regional produce along Scandinavian Crescent and the surrounding streets, running to seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic produce, bread, cheese, meat, wine and oils, plus pigs, chooks, stock feed, cut flowers, plants and seedlings, with live and local music through the morning.

Good to know before you go

Third Sunday, 9am to 1pm, and plan on doing both markets rather than choosing: they are a few minutes apart and finish at the same time. Bring cash and bags. Talbot sits between Clunes and Maryborough in the central goldfields, roughly two hours from Melbourne, so this is a day trip rather than a detour.
