Market date finder

Most Australian markets are not weekly. Turn the pattern into real dates.

“Third Saturday of the month” is easy to say and surprisingly easy to get wrong. Choose a pattern and a day to see the next twelve dates it produces, which of them land on a public holiday, and which markets in the directory trade on the same pattern.

Why the pattern trips people up

A month starts on any day of the week, so the third Saturday can be as early as the 15th or as late as the 21st. Count from the first Saturday, not from the first week. In a month that begins on a Sunday, the first Saturday is the 7th and the third is the 21st.

Months with five of a given day cause the other common mistake. A “last Sunday” market and a “fourth Sunday” market trade on the same date most months, then a week apart whenever there is a fifth Sunday. If a listing says one and you remember the other, you can be right ten times and wrong twice a year.

The dates here are the regular pattern. Markets move for public holidays, bad weather and December, so use this to plan and the organiser’s own page to confirm. For what is actually trading in the next few days, markets this weekendworks from each market’s own schedule, and when Australian markets run explains the monthly habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "third Saturday of the month" mean exactly?
The third time a Saturday occurs in that calendar month, which is always between the 15th and the 21st. It is not the Saturday of the third week, and that difference is why people turn up a week out.
Is the last Sunday the same as the fourth Sunday?
Usually, but not always. A month with five Sundays has its fourth Sunday a week before its last one. Markets that say "last Sunday" mean the final one, so in a five-Sunday month the two patterns give different dates.
Why do markets change their date in December?
Because the fourth weekend often falls on or after Christmas. Many monthly markets move to the third weekend for December only. The date finder shows the regular pattern, so confirm a December date with the organiser.
