Brisbane Markets

Brisbane Markets at Rocklea is the wholesale complex behind Queensland's only Central Market, and its history stretches back much further than its current site. Brisbane's first Central Market opened in 1868 in a council-built riverfront shed, but poor patronage forced its closure by 1881. The Brisbane Fruit and Produce Exchange followed in 1906, extending the 1884 Roma Street Markets into Turbot Street, before decades of inner-city congestion finally pushed the industry toward a purpose-built solution.

Ninety-six years in the making, before a single truck ever reached Rocklea

That purpose-built market was, in the industry's own words, a dream over 30 years in the making. On 31 August 1964, the new Brisbane Market finally opened at Rocklea, and the old Roma Street and Turbot Street sites were closed for good. Six decades later, the site has grown into a genuine industrial city of its own: 77 hectares, more than 40 buildings, and 150 businesses working on the ground, moving over 700 million kilograms of fresh produce worth more than $2 billion every year, making it Australia's third largest Central Market.

While most of the complex is strictly trade-only, the public gets its own window into this wholesale engine every Saturday morning through Saturday Fresh Market, the retail side trading within the same gates, giving everyday shoppers access to produce sourced through the same supply chain that feeds much of South East Queensland's grocers and restaurants.

Good to know before you go

The wholesale complex itself isn't generally open to casual browsing; visiting as a member of the public means timing a trip around Saturday Fresh Market's public trading hours instead. Being Queensland's only Central Market gives the site a genuinely unique role in the state's fresh food supply chain, well beyond what a single Saturday visit reveals.
