Sydney Markets traces its lineage back to the original Sydney wharf markets of 1788, making it one of Australia's oldest continuously operating trading places, though the current Flemington site dates only to 1975, when a purpose-built market complex replaced the cattle and sheep saleyards that had traded there since 1882. Inside that complex, Sydney Flower Market is the central wholesale supplier of cut flowers to florists across New South Wales and the ACT, operating out of a dedicated building rather than sharing floor space with the fruit and vegetable growers market next door.

Early mornings in Building F

The Flower Market opens its doors to the general public, not just trade buyers, from Building F: Monday to Friday between 6am and 9am, and Saturday between 5am and 9am, with Sunday closed entirely. Most of the real trading happens before 8am, so the earlier the visit, the better the selection, and Saturday's 5am opening tends to bring in the freshest stock of the week as growers restock ahead of the weekend.

Unlike a typical weekend produce market, the Flower Market runs on a florist's schedule: it operates as part of the Sydney Markets site's broader 24-hour, seven-day cycle, but the public access window is deliberately narrow and early, timed to catch stock before trade buyers clear it out for the day. That trade-first rhythm is exactly why Saturday's earlier 5am opening exists, giving the public a shot at the same fresh delivery the florists get.

Public access hours are much narrower than a typical market, so plan to arrive close to opening rather than mid-morning, and note it's closed to the public on Sundays entirely. Parking is available on site, and cash is worth carrying since not every stallholder inside a working wholesale market takes card.
