Avoca Beachside Markets

Avoca Beachside Markets is in its fourteenth year and has settled into a shape most monthly markets never reach: 120 or more food, produce, eco, sustainable and local artist and maker stalls laid out along the Heazlett Park foreshore, free to walk into, on the fourth Sunday of every month. It is owned, operated and curated by FIXX Events & Marketing, and the curation is the reason the stall list leans local rather than generic.

A market that reads the calendar carefully

The organisers make a point of saying every 4th Sunday, not the last Sunday, which is a distinction that matters in any month with five Sundays and catches out plenty of visitors who assume the two are the same. Trading runs 9am to 2pm, longer than most Central Coast monthlies, with a live music stage curated by Fairplay Entertainment, water rides for children, and thematic decoration by Colorbomb. It is dog friendly, and the event is held on Darkinjung land.

The sustainability angle runs deeper than the stall categories. Shoppers are asked to bring reusable bags, and recycled market bags are sold on site for $2 for anyone who forgets. The stall mix covers art, skincare, jewellery and international food alongside the produce, with picnic spots on the foreshore for anyone who wants to sit with what they have bought.

Good to know before you go

Parking is the single biggest constraint, so plan not to drive to the door. Walking in along the beach from Hunter Park is the organisers' own first suggestion, with carpooling, cycling, rideshare and the Busways service as the alternatives. Avoca Beach is roughly 40 minutes from Hornsby, an hour from Newcastle and about an hour and a quarter from Sydney, which makes this a comfortable day trip rather than a quick detour.
