Port Elliot Rotary Market

Over 40 stalls fill Lakala Reserve on Young Street on the first and third Saturday of the month, trading 9am to 2pm from October through to May. The Rotary Club of Encounter Bay runs it, and the format is a proper country market rather than a coastal craft market: fresh local produce, home baked goods, honey, plants, books, hand crafted items and bric-a-brac, with refreshments through the middle of the day.

The setting does a lot of work here. Lakala Reserve has a lake with ducks and other birdlife, a playground and barbecue facilities, and it is within walking distance of Port Elliot's main street. That combination turns a shopping trip into a morning out, which is why the market draws holiday traffic off the Fleurieu Peninsula rather than just locals doing a produce run.

The point of the whole exercise is fundraising. Every dollar the market clears goes towards local charities, community organisations and humanitarian projects, and over the past year the club distributed more than $40,000 in grants and community support across the region. It is a Rotary market in the full sense: the volunteers who take your money at a stall are the same people deciding where it goes.

Practical notes

Check the calendar before you drive down, because the schedule is not a simple fortnightly pattern. October to May is the season, the first and third Saturday is the base rule, December adds a fourth market and January goes weekly. Outside that window there is nothing on at Lakala Reserve.

The winter closure exists for a practical reason: the reserve pools water over the wetter months, which makes a grassed market site difficult. Bring cash, bags, and something for the kids to do at the playground while you work through the stalls. If you are staying on the Fleurieu, the market pairs naturally with a walk along the Port Elliot foreshore afterwards.
